One Community: The Danger of a Single Story
The Division of Diversity and Inclusion’s 8 part series “One Community: The Danger of a Single Story” provides an opportunity for faculty and staff to hear and learn from the lived experiences of multicultural members of Purdue’s community. Too often in our society, our knowledge of “the other” (those different from ourselves) is greatly informed by the barrage of stereotypical images found in the media. Without the opportunity for authentic exchange and dialogue, the mediated images become our safe, convenient and unquestioned truth about “the other.”
The goal of the series is to increase cultural awareness through dialogue as we provide more than a single story. This series complements the Division’s 2012 theme of Identity, as our sense of self is created in part by our social, cultural or ethnic group memberships.
Each session will have a panel who share a common group identity. Sessions will begin at 11:30AM and conclude at 1:00PM and requires a separate registration.
Light refreshments will be served.
